Associate Vice President, Federal and Washington Relations
John F. Sturm, former president and chief executive officer of the Newspaper Association of America (NAA), was appointed associate vice president of Federal and Washington relations at the University of Notre Dame on June 1, 2012.
“We are pleased that John Sturm has accepted the challenge of this newly established position,” said John Affleck-Graves, Notre Dame’s executive vice president. “His expertise in public policy and communications help enhance the national and international visibility of Notre Dame’s work and mission.” While based in Washington, Sturm is frequently on campus meeting with faculty and administration.
Sturm retired from the NAA presidency in 2011 after 16 years at the helm of the newspaper industry’s largest trade organization. Before joining the NAA staff, Sturm worked in the Washington office of CBS as vice president for government affairs. He also worked with NBC as senior counsel in Washington and served in several capacities at the Federal Communications Commission. He served as an officer in the US Army Reserve.
He currently serves on the corporate advisory board of “So Others Might Eat” (“SOME”) in Washington, DC and is a member of the US Advisory committee of the IESE Business School in Barcelona, Spain. Sturm has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Federal Communications Bar Association. He is also a member of the Bar of the District of Columbia and has been admitted to the bar of the United States Supreme Court. Sturm, a 1969 alumnus of Notre Dame and a native of Indiana, holds a law degree from Indiana University’s Maurer School of Law.
